Frequently Asked Questions

With clear, direct answers to most homeowners deck questions:

How much does a typical deck cost in the Twin Cities?

Most of the projects we build in the Twin Cities fall between $15k–$40k.Smaller, simpler decks start around $15k–$25k, while large multi‑level or “outdoor living space” builds with railings, lighting, and stairs can be $50k+.

After a quick call and a few photos, we’ll give you a clear ballpark range before anyone comes to your home, so you can see if it fits your budget with zero pressure.

What's the difference between wood and composite?

In simple terms: wood costs less upfront, composite costs less over time.

- Wood (pressure‑treated or cedar): lower initial price, needs staining/sealing every 12-24 months, typically lasts 10-20 years with good care.

Composite: higher upfront, no staining or sealing, resists warping and rot, and can last 50+ years with basic cleaning.

During your consultation, we’ll show you good / better / best options in both materials so you can see side‑by‑side how the look, maintenance, and price compare.

What does the process look like from first call to finished deck?

Our job is to make this simple:

1. Phone / virtual consult to talk through your ideas, budget, and timeline.
2. On‑site visit & measurements so we can design to your exact space.
3. Design & proposal with a clear scope, price, and options.
4. Permits & HOA approvals handled by our team.
5. Build phase where our crew completes the project and keeps your yard tidy.
6. Final walkthrough to make sure everything looks and functions exactly how you expected.

Most projects move from first call to completed deck in about 5-10 weeks, depending on design and permits.

How long does it take to get permits and start building?

Depending on the city, permits typically take about 2-5 weeks once plans are submitted. Some projects are faster, more complex designs can take a bit longer.

We handle all drawings, paperwork, and back‑and‑forth with the city/HOA for you, and we keep you updated so you’re never wondering where things stand. Once permits are approved, we schedule your start date and lock it in.

Are you licensed, insured, and familiar with local building codes?

Yes. Deck Science is a fully licensed and insured contractor in Minnesota.

License: #798326

Coverage: 7-Figure Liability

We pull all required permits, build to city codes, and coordinate inspections so your deck is safe, legal, and ready to enjoy.

Do you offer financing or payment plans?

Yes. For qualified homeowners, we offer financing through our trusted partners so you can pay for your deck over time instead of in one lump sum.

Options often include:

  • Terms from 6–120 months
Payments as low as $200/month on typical projects
  • Fast approvals, with no obligation to move forward if the numbers don’t feel right
  • Ask us during your consult and we’ll walk you through the options for your exact project amount.
What kind of warranty do you offer on workmanship and materials?

You get 1-year workmanship coverage from Deck Science. If something we built fails due to our installation during that time, we fix it at no labor cost to you.

On top of that, many of the composite and railing products we use carry manufacturer warranties of 20–50 years against fading, staining, and structural defects.

What happens if something goes wrong or I'm not happy after the project?

If something isn’t right, we make it right.

Here’s how we handle it:

  1. You let us know what’s wrong.
  2. We schedule a visit to inspect and diagnose the issue.
  3. If it’s related to our workmanship within 1 years, we repair it at no labor cost.
  4. If it’s a material issue, we help you work directly with the manufacturer to use your product warranty.

We also offer an On-Time On-Budget Guarantee on our projects: your project will be completed on-time and on-budget. If it runs over, we pay you our profit on the project.

What happens after I fill out the form?

You’ll hear from us within 60 minutes during business hours (or first thing the next business day).

  1. We’ll confirm a few details about your project and answer initial questions.
  2. We’ll ask for photos of your existing space so we can come prepared.
  3. We’ll schedule a phone or in‑home consultation at a time that works for you.

No spam, no endless sales calls – just a clear plan, a price range, and next steps so you can decide if we’re the right fit.
